Furnishing your home? Here’s what you need to do.

If you’ve just moved into a new home, or if you’re looking to buy some new furniture, this article is for you.

It’s no secret that furniture can make or break the way a room functions and feels - so whether you’re struggling with what size pieces will work for your space, or how to get out of that rabbit hole of options you've found - here are some tips that’ll help you furnish your space so it feels clean and timeless.

Function

  • Awareness. Be conscious of the key activities happening in the space so that your furnishings support them. This seems obvious - but it's crucial to pay attention to all users in the space - kids, pets, guests. When you're furnishing a living room, think about how people will be able to converse comfortably.

  • Arrangement. Consider the circulation through a space and the main pathways that feel natural to walk through a room. If you’re looking at a large open-plan area, it’s helpful to create ‘zones’ that’ll host key activities, like living/ dining. Choosing a focal point in a room will also help you arrange your furniture. This could be a TV wall, a window with a view, or a statement artwork.

  • Layout. Using painter’s tape, tape out the ‘foundational’ pieces - the rug, sofas, dining table, bed - to help you visualise the scale of those pieces in your room before you go shopping. Make a note of your ideal dimensions - this’ll be helpful to have handy when you’re falling in love with a sofa that’s 3 times too big and 5 times more expensive than your budget (we’ve all been there).

Aesthetics

  • Mood. Call it an inspiration board, a mood board, a visualisation board - this is your key to creating a cohesive design direction for your space - and to keep you from getting too overwhelmed when you’re sourcing your pieces.

  • Shop. Whether online or offline, look for your foundational furniture pieces first. Start by collecting images of the things you like, using your dimensions and moodboard as a reference point. Online shopping is a time-saver if you’re familiar with a brand or know their products - but especially when it comes to buying a sofa or chair - it’s important you actually sit on it to make sure it’s comfortable.

  • Edit. Put all your furniture selections together (digitally or physically), and see how they work together. Play around with your selection until you’re happy with it and it feels just right.
